David’s Open Letter To YOU
By David on Mar 24, 2008 in Site News
Dear PCMech Reader:
Chances are you have come to PCMech EDU because you found us through our main PCMech website. You are interested in computers and technology and you visited our site. Perhaps you even subscribe to our weekly newsletter and you got my invites onto our early notification list for PCMech EDU.
However you came to us, welcome. And now, give me just a minute of your time.
When I first began hinting at PCMech EDU on the main website, I referred to it as “the next big thing” for PCMech. And I meant that in every way. See, PCMech is, at it’s core, all about technology education. It is what put PCMech on the map, so to speak. Now, about 6 months ago, I made the strategic decision to turn the main PCMech site into a blog. I did this so that we could keep the site a lot more current and give our readership what they want to repeat visits to PCMech. It turned out to be one of my best decisions yet, and all user feedback I have gotten seems to reflect that you like what we are doing on PC Mechanic.
I am well aware, though, that the change in format can potentially alienate some. Besides, the blog is not really conducive to real, in-depth education. See, blogs are fast-faced and current. Education has to be taken at the student’s pace, and the intention is completely different. At the same time, PCMech has been offering books and CDs in our online store and we will continue to do so. But, the simple fact of the matter is that books and CDs are much harder to update than a website. We can keep PCMech current all we want, but in short order the books can be seen as archaic.
So, I decided to blend the best of all worlds together into one new, powerful system that is now called PCMech EDU. By being completely web-based, we can keep it dynamic and up to date. By keeping it separate from the main blog site, I can keep it highly educational and go into a LOT more depth than we ever have. And by providing real service to our members, we can now offer a solution to our members like none other we have ever done.
If I had to sum up my job in one statement, it would be “using the Internet to improve people’s lives.” It so happens I have chosen the world of technology because that is what I most enjoy. But, for me, PCMech EDU is as philosophical as it is exciting. For me, it fulfills a mission. It provides a way for me to do exactly what I set out to do.
It also provides an avenue for me to educate in areas that are perhaps not appropriate for PCMech. If I could show people how to make a little extra money online, that is real, practical knowledge that I will feel very fulfilled to have taught. There is simply no more direct way to measure the value of information than money in your bank. And, that kind of information is not suitable for the main PCMech site. However, I could write equally as much about it. I am welcoming the opportunity to share my knowledge in this area and it has really bothered me that I couldn’t share it on PCMech. Well, PCMech EDU is going to be my avenue of doing so.
The Final Word on PCMech EDU
I am excited about PCMech EDU. If you saw what we have planned for our members in the coming months in terms of real, practical information, you’d see why I’m excited.
And this really is a “we”. I am setting this in motion and I am going to be one of your primary instructors. But, don’t think I am going to be single-handedly responsible for this whole thing. This thing is going to grow fast and I will pile people on whenever it is needed. Rich and I are setting it in motion, but I have already gotten input from others and will continue to do so. Be prepared to see some new faces. I’m pulling out all the stops to bring this service to our members.

Hello David; I am presently a member on the PC Mech site. I get your newsletter, and really enjoy it. Do I have to sign up separately on the
pcmech.edu site. I don’t know if I would be of any assistance to you as a charter member, I am not very smart with computers, ( I know just enough to be dangerous ) but am learning. I want to learn more, so I will keep watching.
Thanks Frank
