Tech Support Horror Stories And How To Avoid Them
By David on Mar 24, 2008 in Computers
It seems as if few computer companies today offer quality tech support anymore. As more and more of them try to cut costs, they outsource support to India. The end result is heavily-scripted support, offered by people you may have a hard time understanding, all to the end result of having gotten nowhere.
All we have to do to see where this takes us is to look at the stories offered by our very own PCMech community in regards to Hewlett-Packard.
“This laptop seems to be the ticket if it could ever work properly but unfortunately I don’t think that is possible. Ive called customer support and HP’s customer support is HORRIBLE.”
“Support…. well… you can tell they’re underpaid or uneducated.” - Chris
“I am this close to getting a Macbook Pro. This has gotten ridiculous, and HP’s commercials just piss me off the more.” - Brooke
“I was on the phone with the foreign tech support people for 3 hours last night and they had no way of fixing this common problem.” - Julie
It goes on and on.
I am singling out HP in this case because of the sheer number of such stories PCMech has gotten in response to our review of the HP Pavilion DV6000 Notebook PC. In my experience, these guys following a script. And that script is VERY dumbed down.
The good news is that it is avoidable. How?
By understanding your own PC.
Yes, sometimes hardware fails. You will need to run through the hoops that the manufacturer puts up in order to get your warranty coverage. However, you remain a lot more independent and confident in dealing with tech support if you, yourself, know what you’re doing.
If you find yourself in a position of being a little bit in the dark about your own computer, PCMech EDU may be the ticket for you. Not only do we educate our members on their own computers, but we provide one-on-one access to us as well as our other members. That’s an army of many all available to help you with your computer problems.

How can you hope to solve problems with HP DV6000 and DV 000 when HP is still ignorant of solutions after more than a year. If you check the several websites regarding these problems, there are hundreds of machines unusable for wireless and other problems.Give you a G for guts as you’re only the secomd pub to mention the severe problems
